There was a camera in the room to tell our story

A glimpse behind the scenes of what we’ve been building.

They turned the camera on, asked me how I was doing, and the first thing out of my mouth was this:

Today is the day the world finds out about this.

I hadn’t planned to say it. It’s just what I was feeling.

We’ve spent this summer with a film crew. They came to Central Oregon, sat me down, and asked me questions I’ve never answered publicly before. Why this work exists, who it started with, and what I’m actually trying to do to leave an impact in the world. I answered for hours. Some of it I’ve never said in a training, or on a podcast, or to you.

Then they followed us to Eugene, where a hundred and forty early childhood professionals spent two days learning to be a champion in the life of a child. Cameras at the back of the room. Real people, real practice, no scripts.

Here’s what I keep thinking about.

For twenty-five years, this work happened in small rooms. A six by eight office with one window. A basement with one window. A motel room on a home visit. The work was always real, yet almost nobody ever saw it. And even fewer people could access it.

Someone is finally pointing towards our story. And the strange part is that it isn’t really about me. When I watched that room in Eugene, I didn’t see a training. I saw a hundred and forty people who were ready to be a champion in a child’s life, learning to believe it.

That’s the thing I’ve never been able to show you. Only tell you.

Soon we’ll be able to show you.

I’m not going to say more today, because I want to say it big, and loud, and with lots of intention. What I will tell you is that this November is going to be the biggest thing this work has ever done, and that what we’ve been building is bigger than “just the cards.”

More very soon.
